Hellboy 2: The Golden Army [Blu-ray] [2008]

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army [Blu-ray] [2008]

Every so often a sequel comes along which is head and shoulders above the original. This proves the case.

Hellboy II is far superior to Hellboy. Better story, acting and far more laughs. Its a comic book story told the way comic book stories should be with action, great graphics, romance and humour. I love the ugly super-hero idea. Hellboy II doesn't disappoint and I bet you that after watching the film you too will be sing Barry Manilow songs.

I can only hope that Hellboy III follows the improving trend.

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4

I'm a real fan of sci-fi, and a big fan of this show, but I found this season very slow to take off. The "spiritual"/"destiny" element was so overwhelming in the early episodes that (romantic, chick-flick girl that I am) I found myself longing for a couple of dog-fights and explosions! I still can't come to terms with Lee Adama as a besuited politician. I'm sick of Kara Thrace mooching around talking about visions of earth. Things only came alive for me when we finally have the encounter with the rebel Cylons, and the four Cylons of the fleet are revealed. It felt like a bit of a long wait to get to this point. I will still be buying Series 5, and this series is a necessary link - hopefully they are saving the best for last.

High School Musical (Encore Edition) [2006]

High School Musical (Encore Edition) [2006]

As a straight 39-year-old man I was wary of watching High School Musical to say the least. However I really enjoyed it.

Okay, it is an all smiling all dancing cheesy musical. And you can predict the storyline from the opening credits. But it is done in such a pleasant way that you probably won't be able to help yourself singing along, even if it is to yourself!

The story is hardly groundbreaking. Boy meets girl on vacation. They click (singing a karaoke duet, of course) and, would you believe it, she is transferred to his High School. He's a top basketball player but has a secret desire to sing and dance. They try out for the school musical and the rest as they say is history, or at least a good laugh.

Some scenes are quite funny, the main and supporting cast are excellent. There's nothing more to say except enjoy this movie, even if you may not want to admit it afterwards!

The Tudors: Complete Series 1 [2007]

The Tudors: Complete Series 1 [2007]

While there were some things about this series that had me pulling my hair out! I actually did enjoy this series. I am really into the Tudor history and I do know my fact from fiction. The part about Princess Margaret Tudor marrying with a Portuguese King left me thinking "Why OH Why"! Maybe eventually TV producers will listen and actually stick to fact. It seems crazy not to when the facts are just as exciting! It is sad that this has taken some of the gloss away from what is actually a really well made series.

Take it for what it is, there is still some historical ACCURACY in there and I like the fact they actually gave a mention to Henry's sisters, who both had amazing lives and are largely left out of all Tudor films completely (I do wish they had done it properly though :( ).

I think it is ok to accept some poetic licence though, The Tudors doesn't make claim to be historically accurate. But it is highly entertaining, beautifully done, the locations, costumes, casting (yes I know Henry is a bit suspect, blue eyes no red hair, but he does an ok job I think) Sam Neil is just Brilliant and Amazing as Wolsey!

I think they have enough detail in it and the script flows quite well, I think you really do get to know the characters and you get to like or hate them enough, which can be a hard thing to achieve.

The costumes are amazingly varied and beautiful. I think far superior to any I have seen before in Tudor films. I hope the costume department get credit for these as they really were fantastic. They may bordering on fantasy but...meh. Fantasy, Romance, Masques, was all the passion of Henry VIII so it is believable.

Anyway I would buy this and accept it for what it is, good fun, beautifully made and entertaining.

Extras - The Special

Extras - The Special

I beg to differ with the other reviews of the Extras specials.
This 90 minutes episode is full of "special guests" and it can be very slow to watch , I remeber watching it and thinking , this is slow.
RG's character gets a rather bad run of luck and it looks all far fetched.
In the end they try to wrap it up quickly and give a nice ending but without the effect of The Office ending ( which was much funnier )

There are some good moments mainly due to Steven Marchant.
2 1/2 stars

Peter Pan (2 Disc Special Edition) [1953]

My personal view of this is that Pan is an arrogant self obsessed oik ... but I'm pushing 30 so what would i know ?!!!
My son got it for his 3rd birthday and loves it and despite watching several times isn't bored of it.

Sharpe's Peril [2008]

A fantastic movie. It's nearly the first time, that our hero Sharpe shows his emotion open to every one. ...

101 Dalmatians Platinum Edition [1961]

Great animation, characterization, sound, and imagery rule in "101 Dalmations." It's action, excitement and love, but with a dark theme that's a bit scary.

Aladdin (Musical Masterpiece Edition) [1992]

Aladdin (Musical Masterpiece Edition) [1992]

This film has to be one of if not THE best Disney film there is. The story is great, the voices perfect, the songs brilliant! My favourite song from Aladdin is probably Friend Like Me but that's because I love Genie. However, all the songs are great in this film, there's none that you roll your eyes to because Disney have that great way of including a lovely slowie into a film but still having the humour there (like with A Whole New World).

Loved this film when I was little and chuffed now that my littl'un loves it too. Great fun for family viewing and still funny for adults!
