Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2 Disc Special Edition) [2007]

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2 Disc Special Edition) [2007]

Although I am not the greatest Harry Potter fan in the world I have always enjoyed the film series and thankfully this film continues this trend. The Order of the Phoenix sees the dark lord Voldemort gathering his forces but with the Ministry of Magic refusing to acknowledge his return Harry and his friends must defy the Ministry in order to prepare for the coming war. Complicating matters is Ms Umbridge, the Ministry appointed Defence from the Dark Arts teacher, who is willing to do anything for the Ministry of Magic.

I haven't read any of the Potter books as yet and as such I cannot comment about how closely this film sticks to the book and I have heard mixed reports on the subject. Nevertheless I do feel that the film fits in very will with the style established by the other movies in the series and did enjoy watching the film. The acting is, like the previous films, mixed with some good performances, a few great performances and the odd bad performance on show. The true strength of this film though is the strong writing, which is funny and tense in equal measure, and the special effects that are impressive throughout. Overall the Order of the Phoenix is probably one of the best of the Potter films released so far but it is still missing something that would make it a great film.

Ratatouille [2007]

Ratatouille [2007]

I am a fan of most of the Pixar films but have to say that I found this one to be slightly disappointing. It is brilliantly animated,Paris looks glorious and it is well voiced. For some reason though,'Ratatouille' just didn't hold my attention and it isn't a film that I would watch again.
The highlight comes from the voice of Peter O' Toole as Anton Ego.He clearly has a ball as the arrogant food critic and all of the scenes he features in are a delight. On the whole I did feel that this isn't in the same league as 'Toy Story 1 & 2' or 'A Bug's Life'.A fair effort but not Pixar's best.

Atonement [2007]

Atonement [2007]

I agree with a previous ctitic, this film had most of the ingredients to make a memorable film - except the screenplay. It was fine until a certain point, then went to hell. Don't buy it, rent it if you feel you've got to see it.

In Bruges [2008]

In Bruges [2008]

This is the best film I've seen this year. I don't usually rate Colin Farrell but he's really good at this. If you like a bit of black comedy then you'll love this.

Ben 10 - Series 1 Vol.1

Ben 10 - Series 1 Vol.1

In typical Warner Bros style, an excellent animated series, poor release treatment!! There are no extras what-so-ever, plus the episodes are in the incorrect aspect ratio of 4:3, rather than the 16:9, of which the series was produced using. So with these in mind, I give this release, 2 stars.

Hopefully, the second half of this series will be released in the 16:9, so we can see the series as it was meant to be, along with some decent extras, though from knowing of the many WB poor releases, I very much doubt it!!

Barbie - Barbie In A Christmas Carol [2008]

Barbie - Barbie In A Christmas Carol [2008]

My daughter is 5 and she loves all the Barbie movies. We have them all on DVD and she watches them a lot. Sometimes kids films are hard for an adult to enjoy but the Barbie ones are all so well done and written that I don't mind watching them with her. This is a re-telling of the Charles Dickens story and they have adapted it for young girls. There is no grim reaper style spirit and they don't show the character's death so it is much nicer. Heartwarming tale about the true meaning of Christmas. Any little girl would love this movie.

Supernatural - Complete Season 1-3

Supernatural - Complete Season 1-3

I love my TV shows, I'm a big fan of PRISON BREAK, 24, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, SMALLVILLE, MY NAME IS EARL, LOST.

I'm always on the lookout for a new show, and I downloaded all three seasons of Supernatural after reading good things on it on IMDB. What happened though was I watched the first three episodes and straight away I loved it. I searched it up on Amazon and I couldn't believe the price. £28 for all three seasons! So I ordered it straight away.

I was a little apprehensive though at first has I thought all three seasons were going to come in one big box, and I like my TV shows to have individual boxes for each season, so I was really happy when it arrived and the main case was a slip case with individual cases for each season. There very smart cases as well.

I've watched the opening 15 episodes and its a fantastic show, very different to all the other shows I watch. The two main characters are extremely likable. I don't normally like scary films or TV shows, but this is extremely addictive. Some episodes are very scary and some are just funny.

Overall this is a fantastic value box set.

Mad Men

Mad Men

Forget the Wire, forget the Sopranos, forget the West Wing, all of which have been called 'the greatest TV show in history'. The true deserving winner of that mantel is Mad Men. Created and produced by one of the lead writers of the Sopranos (who incidentally was hired on the back of his spec script for Mad Men), the series unsurprisingly holds the same preoccupation of that show; mainly the seedy underside of the American dream.

The true glory of this show is also what may put some viewers off. Everything which exists in the show is underplayed, every scene cariied in small moments which betray the truth of the individual characters. Everything in this show exists in sub-text. It is perhaps the first TV show ever which does not feel the need to spoon-feed its audience with exposition and big dramatic pay-offs. However, there are massively dramatic moments sliced throughoout the show and everything builds. As a writer myself I am stunned by the construction that exists in the show. Some viewers, as a result may find things slow moving, however, in truth it is not, it's just cleverer. If you care about drama, if you want to see writing at its peak, watch this show, you won't be disappointed.

Mr Benn - The Complete Series

Mr Benn - The Complete Series

I bought this DVD for my young son when he was two years old, with a degree of nostalgia in mind. I would not have anticipated quite what a hit it has been. The gentle, moral tales have captivated him to an amazing degree. We must have been watching these for a year now and he doesn't tire of them at all. The animation of the pictures is very simple but effective, the music is just wonderful. Unlike some other DVDs I've bought (Trumpton, Clangers) this one has lasted the test of time wonderfully - my only complaint is that the new Gladiator tale jars slightly image wise and leaves utterly unexplained how Mr Benn is supposed to know Basher in the first place!!
