Lark Rise to Candleford: Complete BBC Series 1 [2008]

Lark Rise to Candleford: Complete BBC Series 1 [2008]

Lark Rise to Candleford is a trilogy of semi-autobiographical novels about the English countryside, written by Flora Thompson, and first published in that form in 1945. This is the 2008 ten-part BBC adaptation, starring Julia Sawalha, Olivia Hallinan, Brendan Coyle and Dawn French.

This is for me the perfect entertainment. Great filming, great language, style, elegance, human relationships, a world changing, extremes in poverty and richness. A world long gone is brought back. This is no trashy entertainment playing to a dump audience. This is just first class.

The cast is just wonderful, all of them, but I have to admit that Julia Sawalha as Dorcas Lane is just fantastic. I am impressed by her as I am impressed by the whole adaption. Most impressive is the setting as well. Creating such a hamlet and market town is just phenomenal. The details are just amazing.Cannot wait for the second part to be filmed. In short this DVD will not be my one weakness -)

Peep Show - Series 1-5 - Complete [2003]

Peep Show - Series 1-5 - Complete [2003]

I'm not one for hyperbole but I'd be hard pressed to think of a better sit com in the canon of British comedy. You heard me!

Peep Show has earned its place on the vaunted Brit Com pedestal along with Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and Only Fools and Horses.

Starring comedy duo David Mitchell and Robert Webb the premise of the program is that it is shot entirely in the first person (actors use hand held or even head mounted cameras while they act through their scenes) and we the audience are privvy not only to their points of view but to their thoughts as well.

Peep Show centres around the lives of two flat mates, conservative loan manager Mark Corrigan (Mitchell) and out of work musician Jeremy Usbourne (Webb). While the "odd couple" field of comedy has been run into the ground it is no mean feat that the writers and cast are able to make this dynamic fresh and entertaining.
The dialogue which is consistently sharp and flawlessly executed by the entire cast contributes a great deal to this but where the real comeidic platinum lies is the characters' internal monologues which give us a private insight into their (and by association our own) little neuroses.

Take this little nugget from Jeremy when trying to co-ordinate his hastily assembled band in a music studio;

God this is terrible. I wish they were robots. I wish I was a robot. Maybe I could punch through a wall.

Or Mark's;

God, I'm even boring when I'm a Nazi.

These snippets provide a sense of surrealism and seem to be an incredibly liberating tool for the writers as they are able to articulate those silly, arbitrary and often hilarious thoughts that we all have which are pushed aside by our sensible conscious minds.

The supporting cast is also consistently spot-on and peripheral characters are always well written and superbly acted. Mark's macho love rival Jeff, Jeremy's ideologically confusied American girlfriend Nancy, alternately scary and sexy neighbout Toni, the entire supporting cast are lovingly crafted by all involved. Special mention should go to Matt King for his portrayal of Jeremy's band mate, Superhans. Superhans' ernest but ill conceived political doctrines and dubious charisma make him one of the most entertaining characters in the series and it is with great wisdom that the writers use him sparingly. Here are a few of Superhans' finest pieces of dialogue;

"The secret ingredient is crime!"
"What you're doin' there is, you're drinkin' an advert intcha?"
"He thinks there's a pigeon in Catalonia that's controlling his legs!"

And my all time favourite;

"People like Coldplay and voting for the Nazis, you can't trust people!"

Not only is Peep Show a flawlessly executed piece of high-concept comedy (without being overly pretentious or self referential) but it seems to tap wonderfully into that uniquely British neurosis

Shameless, profane, irreverent, endlessly quotable and accutely observed the quirky characters and brilliantly surreal dialogue very quickly transcend being merely funny and become hugely endearing.

As with all great comedy there are great moments of human drama in these five amazing series and the acting throughout is simply perfect.

I dearly love Peep Show and I'm quite certain that you will too should you ever come into contact with it!

Forgetting Sarah Marshall [2008]

Forgetting Sarah Marshall [2008]

Found this movie likable, but not laugh out loud funny. Still entertaining enough, but in places it was quite predictable.
The lead, Jason Segel is good as the heartbroken Peter but the best thing about this movie is Russel Brand who basically stole the show. Normally i'm not a big fan of his but I thought he was brilliant here as the sex mad rock star. He definitely made this movie worth watching and he was funny at the right moments.
A watchable and often funny movie worth watching for the hilarious supporting cast.

Kung Fu Panda (2-Disc Edition) [2008]

Kung Fu Panda (2-Disc Edition) [2008]

summary: ok I'm biased, I love animated movies, martial art movies, and comedy in general but this really got to me - your kids will love it too!

========================
Jack Black voices Po, a lazy, overweight Panda who idolises the Furious Five kung fu champions: Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross), Viper (Lucy Liu) and Monkey (Jackie Chan). However, when Po gatecrashes an initiation ceremony, he is accidentally chosen to be the mythical Dragon Warrior, who is destined to save his valley from the villainous leopard Tai Lung (Ian McShane).

The Furious Five are mortified that Po has gatecrashed their ranks, but Master Oogway (Randall Duk Kim) tells them that there are no accidents and this is indeed Po's destiny. However, when word reaches the Five that Tai Lung has escaped from prison, Po has to get into shape fast, so he begins training under Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman).

Wanted [Blu-ray] [2008]

Wanted [Blu-ray] [2008]

I saw this film at the cinema and really enjoyed it - so much so that I pre-ordered the Blu-Ray. It's pure comic book and should be enjoyed as such. Leave your brain at the door and just enjoy the ride. It's not a high-brow cinematic classic but it packs a lot of fun into a couple of hours.

Dancing On Ice Live Tour 2008

Dancing On Ice Live Tour 2008

Have just bought this to go with the 2007 live tour, and this is brilliant, as was the 2007 live tour, this comes with subtitles which the 2007 one didn't have, very useful for hard of hearing people, all the stars from all 3 series are here and clever pairings for those that couldn't be matched with their original partner from the tv series for whatever reason. there's behind the scenes of the tour and interviews. Universal studios own the rights to the Live Tour Series, so this is the full night filmed live as opposed to ITV's series of DVD's which is just highlights. Thoroughly recommend this!

Santa Claus - The Movie [1985]

Santa Claus - The Movie [1985]

I have watched this film every Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember, and no matter how many times I watch it, it seems just as magical as the very first time I ever saw it.

This is a wonderful story that explains the Legend of Christmas in a way which will never fail to entrall generations of children. It tells the story of Santa Claus from his origin; how a humble & kind toymaker with a love for children and a skill in carpentry became the man we now know as Santa Claus. This Movie answers all the questions ever asked about Santa by children, from how his Reindeer fly to how he delivers all the presents in just one night. David Huddleson completely encompasses Santa Claus in every which way, complete with white beard, hair, suit, sack and flying reindeer. And the brilliant Dudley Moore throws in excellent elements of comedy as the impressive Elf Patch. Although there is a storyline to this, concerning Patch and a young street-urchin called Joe whom Santa be-friends, and an evil Entrepeneur trying to steal Xmas away from Santa, it still retains its wonder magic and doesn't stray away from the real story - the legend of Father Christmas.

Even today as a fully grown Adult I still regress to 5 years old when I see this film, and it never fails to capture my imagination. I can honestly say there is no other Christmas movie out there that makes me feel this way. I simply adore this film and I'm sure any child who watches this at Christmas will come away loving it just as much as I do still today.

Family Guy - Season 1 [1999]

Family Guy - Season 1 [1999]

Even though this DVD is quite old, it has some of the best Family Guy episodes. The content on the DVD really shows how Family Guy became so popular. Each episode will make you laugh out loud even if your in the worst of moods 10/10.

Step Up 2 The Streets [2008]

Step Up 2 The Streets [2008]

Obviously designed for the younger generation, Step Up 2: The Streets is a well choreographed and fast paced movie that has less of the drama of the first, but a lot more of the message, 'It's not what you have, it's what you make of what you have'.

The storyline was lacking a lot after the first, but I found the dancing and the rawness of this film a lot better than the first.
It seems a lot less polished than the first also (Perhaps due to style of dance or new directing), but nethertheless it's a good film.
The dance scene at the end was truly something and much better than anything in Step Up, although the rain involved played a big part im this.

Overall, Storyline, a lot more basic than first but dance scenes a lot better than first (In my Opinion). The biggest compliment i can give is that straight after watching this film, me and one of my girlfriends got up and started to dance, checking out all the hip-hop and dance videos on youtube. Check it out and it just may inspire you!

(There are other dance groups pieces for the street battle as extras on the disc aswell.)
