Barbie and the Diamond Castle [2008]

Barbie and the Diamond Castle [2008]

Another great Barbie film and addition to the collection, the songs were quite poppy and very catchy and as usual there is a clear moral to the story. My daughter loved it and can't wait for Christmas Carol to come out!

Speed Racer [2008]

Speed Racer [2008]

Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is obsessed with racing. Even as a boy (Nicholas Elia in these flashbacks), he couldn't concentrate on school but spent the day dreaming about cars. Of course, he comes by it naturally. Pops (John Goodman) designs race cars and older brother Rex (Scott Porter) is an up and coming champion. Things hit a bump when Rex and Pops fight and Rex leaves home only to die amidst allegations of wrong doing.

But racing is in the Racer family blood (no surprise with that name), and Speed seemed destined to take the crown. After making a splash at a local race, he catches the eye of Royalton (Roger Allam) who is a big sponsor of other racers. He promises Speed the moon, but when Speed turns him down, he turns nasty, threatening Speed and his family. Now he'll have to team up with the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox). But can they work together well enough to bring the truth to light?

I hadn't intended to see this movie, but after I read a rave review, I went to see it. And I'm glad I did because I loved it.

This movie looks amazing. The racing involves cars in bright lights zooming by. That makes it hard to follow at times. But I loved how it looked. Even the stuff off the track was filled with vibrant color. It was just made for Blu-Ray.

Now I will admit the story starts slowly and is predictable. But I got so caught up in things, I really didn't care. In fact, I was sorry to see it end. But when we reached that ending, I felt like standing up and cheering.

The characters never get too much beyond one dimensional. But I loved them anyway, rooting for the heroes and booing the villain.

Even though this movie was done by the Wachowski Brothers, it isn't one of their adult oriented epics. Yes, there is a moral to the story, but it isn't hit you in the face. And everything is in keeping with the PG rating. In fact, Speed has a younger brother who has a pet chimp, and those two steal every scene they are in. I loved them.

This is a movie designed for a foremost to entertain. And it did that for me. I can't wait to see it again, and I'm really hoping we get a sequel.

The IT Crowd Series 1 & 2 Box Set [2005]

The IT Crowd Series 1 & 2 Box Set [2005]

I've haven't taken to a show like this since My Name Is Earl began, The IT Crowd has to be the funniest programme about at the moment.
I agree the laughter can be annoying, but that worked for the Bottom series and Young Ones and as its live (Not canned) it doesn't ruin the show like two pints of larger.
I admit I only bought it for Richard Ayoade as I find him hilarious, but he, Katherine Parkinson and Chris O'Dowd work so well together to make this hilarious, i'm ashamed to admit I've only just got into it.
It wrote by the creators of Father Ted so you know you can expect some very funny comedy.
I can't recommened this enough, I have watched each episode around 3 times and i've only owned this a month.

Roll on Series 3 - Due out very shortly

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian [Blu-ray] [2008]

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian [Blu-ray] [2008]

I was looking forward to this movie, this was one of the iconic books from my childhood. I have to say that I very much enjoyed it, however maybe not as much as the first film. The filming was excellent, with beautiful backdrops and surroundings, very good CGI and good acting. It's been so long since I read the books however, that I can't remember if this was faithful to the original though... will have to re-read them I think! The things that let it down for me were the comedy elements, the mouse-knights and alike fitted very much with a Disney film, however I thought that they were not necessary, and detracted from the story. Also the knights masks were straight out of the 300, thought they could have been more original. Word of warning though, not sure if I would let very small children see it though as there is quite a lot of violent deaths albeit no blood. Good movie, but not a 5 star effort for me. Blu-Ray looked excellent, crystal clear and very impressive especially on the panoramic scenery shots.

What Happens In Vegas [2008]

What Happens In Vegas [2008]

I laughed out loud the whole way through this film. Typical Diaz and Kutcher humour, good silly fun with a reasonable storyline.
If you aren't looking for anything too serious this is for you, and if you are a fan of these 2 you are bound to love it!

Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy [2003]

Pirates Of The Caribbean Trilogy [2003]

Due to so many varied reviews on Amazon about the individual DVD's in the series,I will limit my comments just to say that this box set represents superb family entertainment whatever your age and is possibly one of the best value box sets around.
As family viewing goes,it will keep the kids quiet for hours but the individual films are lengthy so spread your viewing over a couple of weekends to prevent over doing it.The movies themselves are great fun and with so many gruesome characters, make sure the more nervous ones in your family who are old enough to watch have someone to snuggle up to,just in case. In fact,in some of the scenes,I could have done with snuggling up to someone myself!
This is great entertainment and if you have not seen the movies at the cinema yourself, you are in for a treat.
Happy viewing!

Dead Set [2008]

Dead Set [2008]

Dead Set is a well-polished zombie production (particularly considering the limitations of it being an E4 TV series rather than a film) that rises above the zombie norm thanks to writer Charlie Brooker's wickedly satirical swipe at reality TV culture. What makes this work so well is just how easily and neatly the concepts of zombie horror and reality TV are married together. There's the stock characters, the pleasure/horror of voyeurism, the sly commentary on the idiocy of the general public...

However, whilst the series shows a great deal of knowledge of its obvious forebears, this sometimes means it comes across as highly derivative, particularly of Dawn of the Dead and 28 Days Later. Still, such is the cost of wanting to pay knowing homage to your predecessors, it seems.

As for DVD extras, the series includes about a dozen featurettes of varying quality. Some are semi-interesting interviews but a few are just compilations of behind-the-scenes footage that don't really communicate much of any value.

I'd be tempted to give the overall package four out of five, but I'm docking an entire star for the annoying decision to not include the feature length edit of the series that was shown on TV on Halloween. It seems a bit of an oversight to not allow people watching the DVD the chance to view the series as a 2-hour film. A "play all" option is available, but this means you're treated to the credits every half hour instead of a seamless product. This really is an irritating oversight.

Cloverfield [2007]

Cloverfield [2007]

"Truly Terrifying" says the review from the News Of the World, as featured on the back of the DVD case. This is an accurate description of the film, for all the wrong reasons! This film I am afraid to say is terrifyingly bad.

Counting The Blair Witch Project amongst my favourite horror movies, I am not adverse to a bit of shaky camera action but this is way, way over the top. If you don't have a sore head to begin with, you certainly will by the time you have finished watching this film.

The plot is pretty thin as well, and the characters are so underdeveloped that you don't actually care who is killed and who survives. After 81 minutes of watching the film I was left with an overwhelming feeling of "Is that it?"

I am a big fan of J.J. Abrams, having loved Lost and Fringe but this film is definitely not the masterpiece that all the hype has made it out to be.
