The Dark Knight (2 Discs) [Blu-ray]

The Dark Knight (2 Discs) [Blu-ray]

Could the movie live up to the hype? Most definitely. Buy this film if only to see Heath Ledger's portrayal of Batman's arch-enemy the Joker. His performance is worth the cost of the blu-ray alone. I always though that Jack Nicholson's performance would set the standard, but Heath Ledger's Joker knocks that into a hat.

This is a continuance of the Dark Knight created originally by Bob Kane and later re-invented by Frank Miller. Batman ain't Mr NIce Guy and nor should he be. In fact Batman comes across as harder and possibly mentally unstable but then again to wear latex and a cape you have to be a bit mad.

If I found one fault in the film, it would be that it is too long. I would have rather this had been extended and made in too parts like Kill Bill. That worked so well and I am sure this would have been just as good and a continuing legacy to Heath Ledgers best performance.

Sleeping Beauty (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) [1958]

Sleeping Beauty (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) [1958]

This has always been my favourite Disney film, and I am so glad it's been given the loving restoration it deserves.

The fantastic detail and 1950s graphic take of gothic and medieval styles is positively breathtaking. For Walt Disney it was ground breaking (and almost bankrupting) to create something so meticulously detailed and stylistically consistent right down to the backgrounds, and the result is beautiful and atmospheric. The extras are all interesting, detailing the conceptual side of things, and added a whole new perspective on what was always my favourite childhood film (even though I was terrified of Maleficent and convinced she was under my bed).

Amazing as the new computer technology is, it just doesn't for me have the artistic soul and wonder of this kind of traditional animation (no offence to those talented folk who work long and hard creating it, it's just not my bag). Now we strive for 3D realism, in movies like this it was for a blending of styles/genres and a stylistic vision that I feel lost in the computer age. I doubt we'll see animation like this again, and for me that's a crying shame.

And on the character side of things... Flora, Fauna and Merriweather still crack me up, twenty years later.

Bill Bailey - Tinselworm [2008]

Bill Bailey - Tinselworm [2008]

Honestly do not listen to the other reviews, Bill Bailey is a whole new generation of stand up comics, his style is very different and it is supposed to be that way. If you enjoyed Part Troll you will enjoy this, i wont lie it is not as good as Part Troll. However it is still very funny, i saw this live and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you like the comedian Tim Minchin you should enjoy this as these comedians have a very similar style.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [2008]

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [2008]

ok - i agree with weak dialogue, bad acting, poor story. but really, this is "The Mummy...etc 3" (4 if u incld. scorpion king). you don't watch it for its punchy, high brow dialogue, nor for it's exciting, mysterous yet gripping story and you certainly don't watch for the classic acting. you watch it for the bright lights and fancy CGI.

it was a joy to watch with some popcorn, as a relaxing 2hours of mindlessness which, for me, is the sole reason for any film like this. whether it's good enough to buy depends on your need of such films, me i got plenty others very much like it...but maybe one day.

Enjoyable, mindless, and very funny. Downey Jr. was surprisingly brilliant. Little plot or real substance but who cares, just fun hokum and the best film I've seen for a while. Recommended.

Gavin & Stacey : Complete BBC Series 2 [2007]

Gavin & Stacey : Complete BBC Series 2 [2007]

Having left my home and native land some 30 years ago to go and live west of the Rockies I was thrilled to be introduced to this series for a birthday present.
The cars, and certainly the gadgets, may be different now, but the characters, the ups and downs of everyday life and all the absurdities are no different. When I was young, we were the Welsh and they - the English - were them. Related, we knew we had to tolerate one another, but at times it was a challenging truce (perhaps like the relationships in the series?)!
Now looking at England and Wales from the outside many years later, the two have far more in common than differences. However, in North America, Britain is called 'England' and I'm quite often asked if I'm English. "No" I reply, more in an educational tone than anything else, "I'm Welsh or British, but I'm not English!" This television series takes the best from both cultures and highlights the hilariousness of each while respecting both equally. I really hope the two series come to North America in order to show the quality of British comedy, and to show there is more to 'England' than England.
