Robin Hood [1973]

Robin Hood [1973]

when asked what my favourite film is ill invariably say disneys Robin hood and the blank looks on the questioners face normally is just a comon occurance that until they have seen the film they dont understand why its so good!

Children and adults alike will love this film, ok the graphics are dated but for 1973 they are very good, the story is jolly, heart warming and a great take on an old fable.

The characters are all animals which makes a change, they are all voiced amazingly and fitting to the animal in every way! The film isnt long but with small children thats ok and the music gets stuck in your head for a good day after seeing it!

Its a definate classic for families and for the disney lover this is a must have. if you havent seen it wtch it youll love it i guarentee!

Spooks : Complete BBC Series 5 [2007] [2002]

Spooks : Complete BBC Series 5 [2007] [2002]

You can try to compare Spooks to US series like 24 but for me Spooks is on a whole different level to 24. After a few short series 24 is starting to go stale with the same kind of plots being played out season after season. The explosions get bigger but the bottom line is still the same. Spooks on the other hand seems to go from strength to strength with every passing season. Yes there are only 10 episodes per season but that gives you some idea of the amount of thought that goes into every episode. I think the reason Spooks gets stronger with every episode is because it doesn't rely on the explosions and gun-battles that 24 does to make an impact. Spooks relies on it's storyline, some fantastic acting and so much realism that you actually finish an episode thinking `bloody hell we're lucky to have them on our side'. In a word it's flawless.

Family Guy Presents Blue Harvest [2007]

Family Guy Presents Blue Harvest [2007]

After finally convincing my brother to watch an episode of Family Guy, infuriatingly it turned out to be this one. It's really not up to the standard I've come to expect of the series' writers, it was pretty lame, really, obviously written by Star Wars fans for Star Wars fans. Now he refuses to watch it at all and thinks I'm daft for liking it. Crud.

Transformers [Blu-ray] [2007]

Transformers [Blu-ray] [2007]

Tell you what, this film was AMAZING! The CGI was so detailed and realistic (well.. as realistic as giant transforming robots can be!). I originally rented this on DVD, but got it on Blu-Ray earlier this week.
I'd never compare this to the Back to the Future trilogy, but if you liked those films, you want some amazing scenes and some all round fun, this is definitely for you.

The Other Boleyn Girl [2003]

The Other Boleyn Girl [2003]

The novel of "The Other Boleyn Girl" is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I've re-read it many times and can see why it would make an excellent subject for dramatisation so why is it so difficult to get right? OK, so certain things may have to be altered to suit modern sensibilites. The fact that Mary was in her early teens when she started her affair with Henry wouldn't sit comfortably with your average cinema audience so I can understand that being altered.

I wanted to like this largely because I didn't like the Hollywood version. The chauvanist in me wanted to think that the BBC could do it better (it usually does after all.) Sadly, I was disapointed. The whole thing seemed colourless and lacking in the sense of drama and excitement that the book portrays so well. As for the shots to camera I half expected Davina McCall to say, "Mary Boleyn , you have been evicted. You have 3 minutes to leave the Big Brother House". Just didn't work for me. Neither did some of the casting. Unlike some of the other reviewers I'm not a fan of Jodhi May. Anne Boleyn needs to be played by someone with charisma, someone that you can imagine Henry VIII causing a schism with the Catholic Church over. For me, Jodhi May looks like a rather gormless wet lettuce and certainly not worth risking your eternal soul over. Maybe it's just her (she spoiled "Tipping the Velvet" for me as well) Steven MacIntosh was also miscast as George Boleyn. George needs to be a sensualist, a rogue. Steven McIntosh was....colourless (that word again.)

So, no I wouldn't recommend this any more than I would the Hollywood version. I would love to see the BBC do a decent serialised version of this. Spend some money on it and get the casting right. In the meantime I'll just re-read the book.

The Edge Of Love [2008]

The Edge Of Love [2008]

This film has a lot of potential, but fell flat on its face. The cinematography was lovely, but the majority of the characters were shallow and superficial. The character of Vera should have been complex, and it needed a much more experienced and more talented actress to give her justice. Keira Knightley doesn't act, she just says her lines with a silly smirk on her face, giving the audience no insight whatsoever into what she's thinking and feeling, and just left me feeling lost and confused and feeling no sympathy towards her character at all. Dylan Thomas was portrayed to be a horrible and self-centred man and I couldn't understand why both Vera and Caitlin were all over him, while William Killick, the only decent and believable character in the whole film, was used and generally treated badly. I know the film is based on real people, and real people don't always have straight forward motives, but the characters in 'The Edge of Love' are just fickle and inconsistent. Not all true stories are meant to be transferred onto the big screen, an audience needs to at least believe in the characters they're watching. Not to mention the dialogue was cheesy and clique, and the plot was jumpy and inconsistent (much like Keira Knightley's accent).
But I like to try and find some good in all the films I watch and as I said earlier the cinematography was simply lovely! Cillian Murphy was the only actor in the film that did a really wonderful job, as he always does.
If 'The Edge of Love' is this years 'Atonement', I'm thoroughly relieved I didn't miss much by not going to see 'Atonement'.

Miracle On 34th Street [1994]

Miracle On 34th Street [1994]

I watched this film as a child, then as an adult, and it always amazes me. Another truly heart warming Christmas film! Richard Attenborough portrays a wonderful Santa Claus, with his remarkable acting skills! It does not matter what age you are with this movie, old or young, it will warm your heart at Christmas time, with a few laughs along the way.

The Tudors: Complete Series 1 And 2 [2007]

The Tudors: Complete Series 1 And 2 [2007]

Season 1
Pulling few punches and garnering its fair share of headlines as a result, The Tudors is a controversial, yet compelling period piece, that dramatically tells the story of the early years of King Henry VIII. Not for nothing, though, has it attracted its fair share of awards attention. For The Tudors is a complex drama, and not one to simplify its storylines. The young Henry, for instance, is exploring his muddled romances and his insecurities, against the challenges his kingdom is facing. It’s a plate-full for him to deal with, and in the hands of a superb performance from Jonathan Rhys Meyers--a real revelation in the role--as the young Henry, it’s all vividly and skillfully knitted together.

But The Tudors isn’t just about its central character, for there’s a terrific supporting cast at work too. Sam Neill’s Cardinal Wolsey, Jeremy Northam’s Thomas More and Natalie Dormer’s Ann Boleyn are just some who earn plaudits here. Behind the camera there’s the pen of Elizabeth writer Michael Hirst at work, and he too deserves much credit, clearly getting his teeth into the fascinating subject matter.

The Tudors is, undoubtedly, a graphic production, and earns its 15 certificate comfortably. It’s also been knocked for the liberties it takes with its history when putting its story across, with some justification. But it’s also most certainly terrific television, mixing in high production values with strong performances. In short, the ten episodes here will simply have you thirsting for the next series. Not before you’ve re-watched Season One a few times, though... --Jon Foster

Season 2
The Tudors: Season 2 begins with all the passion, violence and dark intrigue of the award-winning first series. King Henry (the dashing Jonathan Rhys Meyers) has appointed himself head of the Church of England. Meanwhile, upon the insistence of Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer), Henry breaks all contacts with Katherine and the noble Queen is banished from her court. Furthermore, a cook is blackmailed into poisoning a high-ranking bishop--then boiled alive for his crime. The Reformation has begun.

The Colour Of Magic [2008]

The Colour Of Magic [2008]

I LOVE the Disk World series and was very much looking forward to this film. It's a great adaptation of the first two books AND there's an interview with Terry at the beginning, which is almost worth the price of the dvd on its own. The man is seriously funny.
I know that Terry endorsed the choice of David Jason as Rincewind, but I'm sorry, he's just not Rincewind. He gave it his best shot, and David is a national treasure and a great actor - but he just wasn't the best man for the job in this case.
Sean Astin did his best as Twoflower, the Tourist.
The Luggage was excellent, but didn't feature as much as I would have liked.
It was great to see Tim Curry brought out of seclusion to play Trymon, the baddie and all the other wizards were suitably kooky as well.
The Librarian/Orangutan was a leetle bit artificial ... it was clearly a man in a mon (oops!) ape suit, which was rather a shame, but you can't have everything, I guess, and maybe there wasn't an orangutan available for filming.
The scenery was great, the humour was there in abundance and I highly recommend this to all Pratchett fans.
