Nim's Island

Nim's Island

The film started with an interesting plot...

Nim and her father are living alone on an island when one day her father takes a trip out on his boat and gets lost at sea. Nim asks for help by emailing her favourite author Alex Rover (Jodie Foster).

Alex Rover who is scared of everything sets out to save the day with the help of her favourite self-imagined adventure character.
This was executed well and acted brilliantly by Jodie Foster. What lets the film down though is the way the ending seems rushed, the father returns too quickly at the end. The film focuses only on the journey and not at all on the destination. It would have been nice for Alex and Nim to have some sort of adventure together and explore that relationship more thoroughly before Nims dad had returned.

However it's a cute story and though there are a few obvious plot holes it's an old-fashioned tale of adventure that will capture the imagination.

3:10 To Yuma [2007]

3:10 To Yuma [2007]

I have to start by saying that I enjoyed this film way more than I expected to. Not being a fan of Westerns or Russell Crowe, I wasn't expecting great things, but this film surprised me by keeping my entertained and completely 'in' the film the whole way through. The scenery and direction is superb, the acting is mainly good, the story, although implausible at times, was fun and interesting enough to keep me watching and the overall package makes for two hours of film viewing that is not too heavy and with plenty of fights and action sequences to boot. The actor who plays 'Charlie' is especially good and Crowe even managed to endear himself to me this time. For fans of the genre you may either love this or be disappointed depending on your take, but for everyone else this is a good film, with enough on offer to make for enjoyable viewing. A solid four stars.

The Matrix/Matrix Reloaded/Matrix Revolutions [Blu-ray] [1999]

The Matrix/Matrix Reloaded/Matrix Revolutions [Blu-ray] [1999]

Not a review as such, just a small query. The US Matrix had a problem with missing frames on the Revolutions disc, possibly due to an issue with the master. Has this been sorted for the UK release? I have the HD DVD set, a bit reluctant to double-dip again. And yes, as another gent has mentioned, WHERE'S OUR ULTIMATE SET?!! Good ol' Warner Bros., eh?

Benidorm - Series 1

This is so funny and unfortunately the characters remind me of people I have met and know through life! A great easy comedy that can be watched over again.

Finding Nemo (2 Disc Collector's Edition) [2003]

There are not enough words to express how much I truly adore this movie, it's legendary! I could watch this every day and still not get bored, I'm not even going to wait until I have kids to try and justify me buying it.

The Secret (Extended Edition) [2006]

The Secret (Extended Edition) [2006]

I purchased this DVD assuming that it was the same video I saw originally with extra material added. I did not realize that it was essentially an entirely different film. The material was very similar in most areas, and identical in some others, but had a noticeably different feel from the first original edition. The narrator of the original version (around whose work the Secret film was built) was completely edited out, which robs the film of most of its power. The voice overs were re-recorded and other sections re-shot with other people regurgitating material that was not their own and thus delivered lacking a sense of sincerity. I would never have thought that this could have such an impact on the film, but it certainly does. Very, very disappointing. I feel even more upset that they seem to mislead people into buying this version by calling it an extended edition, and not mentioning anywhere that it is in fact not the original film with more material added but something quite different. Furthermore, the few additional features that are included, with the exception of the blooper reel, are essentially sales pitches suggesting that you visit the website and buy some products there. It cheapens the whole message of the film and leaves you feeling quite unpleasant. That said, the original version is wonderful and I would give it a five star rating without hesitation.
