I was really excited as I put this into my DVD player because winter is really drawing in now and I was looking forward to getting a nice warm polo neck with a pretty pattern to go with my new scarf and mittens. What I got instead though was a thin slice of banality.
Jumper has an excellent tag line: Unpopular youth, played by Hayden Christensen, discovers he can instantaneously teleport to anywhere he wants (the 'jumping' of the title') and decides to use this esoteric skill to rob banks. But the reality of the execution though was something of a let down.
Sure it starts off ok. We see the main character some time after his initial discovery having created a good bit of wealth and living the high life. He is then discovered like a grubby school boy caught playing 'pocket billiards' by a mysterious Samuel L. who seems to have a bit of a prejudice against the lad for reasons that gradually become apparent as the movie progresses. And so we embark on a world wide jump fest in order to get to the bottom of the goings on.
Jamie Bell turns up as a more seasoned jumper and is probably about the best thing in the film. He's a cynical loner and likes it that way but is cajoled into helping Christensen fight the baddies. We also have Diane Lane as Christensen's mother in what seems to be a tacked on storyline about the Jumper's origins.
But where it mostly all goes wrong is with young Hayden himself who has yet to show any acting skill whatsoever in any of the films he's been in. The lad even managed to spoil Return Of The Jedi for me merely by being pasted into one of the later scenes for 5 seconds!
So what could have been a good movie is let down considerably by a poor lead and diminishing returns on the plot.
Now when do I get my new jumper?!
Perfectly written, cast and filmed there really is no television series that can rival Band of Brothers. The Blu Ray release only adds to the experience, the 1080p picture is perfection but perhaps more importantly the DTS-HD sound is simply stunning if run through a home cinema surround sound system, the battle scenes are awesome and the explosions will have ornaments falling off your wall. The sound also brings to life the superb score by Michael Kamen, there is not a finer movie or TV soundtrack around, a true masterpiece. Full credit to Hanks, Spielberg, the BBC and HBO for giving us this classic and absolute respect to the real men of Easy Company, totally inspiring.
I watched this when first broadcast in 1982 and was utterly hooked - it was one of those programmes that was compulsory viewing and much discussed at work the following day. (although I remember Clive James, in his TV reviewer guise at the time, was a bit rude about the fact that it could make a heroine out of Connie, queen of the files.... well, you can't please everybody).
Anyway, the years went by, and then a couple of years ago I accidentally stumbled across this again as it was being repeated on BBC4 or some such ghetto channel. Unfortunately I'd missed the first couple of episodes (they were broadcasting it two episodes at a time) but I got hooked once more and made suitable arrangements to ensure that I caught the rest of the series - my family thought I was mad, but what the hell.
Lots of reviewers here have said that this is how BBC drama used to be, but I disagree to some extent - this is exemplary programme making by any standards. I've watched some other programmes that I thought were compelling on first viewing (I, Claudius, for example) and their age shows - still probably better than most of the rubbish spread thinly across all the channels today, but nowhere near as good as this. Don't go looking for high speed car chases, fisticuffs, or the like (although there are occasional flashes of very nasty stuff - for example when Smiley goes on the boat in Germany, or what happens to the Russian emigre's dog) - this is a slow burning, highly atmospheric story that gradually notches up the intrigue and tension, draws you in and eventually resolves with a satisfactory conclusion yet leaves enough questions dangling to wonder what happened next, and people's motives for their decisions and actions.
A terrific series, in short.
Whilst the Writers' Strike left this season feeling a little empty, the quality of the show continues to shine through. The conclusion to the Sara Saga is excellently pulled off and will certainly bring a tear to the eye of the most faithful CSI fan. Some of the episodes are a bit poor - such as the story of the young lad who develops breasts - but these are balanced out by the other episodes.
Shame there's not as many episodes as there normally are but worth the purchase all the same.
This is an excellent series with true BBC investigation and great contribution from experts and people that lived during the times that some of the programs refer to.
It is definitely worthwhile buying and watching the whole series and it gives many hours of entertainment at a very good price. I actually think that buying the 3 series in one box is a great advantage and worth the extra money as you can not get enough of it.Great value!
Please go ahead and buy all 3 and you will enjoy it for sure!!
...but these dics just plain suck. They lock up permanently, I can't access the main menu anymore and my players freeze all the time. These are the only dics that have that problem. Might have something to do with my players ability to memorize the last play, which unfortunately I can't even turn off and it can be circumvented by playing a bunch of different DVDs to clean the cache of the players, but still it is annoying and frustrating. Great show, but they did something to those discs that makes them almost unusable.
this is the best T.V show you will ever see, you don't have to be a Whedon fan or sci-fi for that matter. a second to none script and superb characters make this show as good as any thing you'll have seen before or since give it a shot i doubt you'll be disappointed... shiny :-)
I love it. I can see the results already and I have only been doing it for 2 weeks. A very goog work out for beginners. I recomend it.
There is just one word to describe this movie, stunning. Hollywood just ca't make movies as good as this. I can't believe some people are giving it one star.
This film appeals on so many levels - it's a farce, a sophisticated comedy, a gangster movie, a musical - some classic lines and probably a good contender for the best last line ever. Please watch this, it's that good.
