Smallville - The Complete Seventh Season

Smallville - The Complete Seventh Season

I had heard some bad things about this season of Smallville from various people but personally I found this seventh season of the show to be greatly entertaining and definitely the best season so far. The main addition for this season is the introduction of Kara Zor-El, Clark's cousin and future Supergirl. This season also sees the introduction of Black Canary as well as seeing the return of Green Arrow, Bizarro and Brainiac. The season itself is a lot more story driven than some of the previous seasons, with far fewer stand alone episodes.

The CGI in this season is good even if it is slightly ropey in a couple of episodes and the acting on show is the usual mixture of hammy and great. Having said this, the writing is generally good throughout the season with quite a few good Superman in-jokes and always produces entertaining episodes even if some of the twists are predictable.

Of the episodes in this season most of the better ones are towards the end of the season with the brilliantly funny `Sleeper', the entertain `Apocalypse' and the greatly engrossing penultimate episode `Quest' being the pick of the seventh season. It is only the a shame that after these great episodes the season finale itself seems something of an anti-climax even if it does leave things on an intriguing cliff-hanger. Overall this seventh season of Smallville has definitely been the best that the show has so far produced and things are looking good for the eighth season.

My Fair Lady (40th Anniversary 2-Disc Special Edition) [1965]

My Fair Lady (40th Anniversary 2-Disc Special Edition) [1965]

The title says it all, I think and the reviewer who considers it classist and misogynist has obviously failed to see the point of the movie which actually makes fun of these attitudes. Remember the scene at Mrs. Higgin's house or Alfred P. Doolite's remarks on 'middle-class morality' - hardly narrow-minded.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [Blu-ray] [2008]

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor [Blu-ray] [2008]

The third film in the The Mummy series freshens the franchise up by setting the action in China. There, the discovery of an ancient emperor's elaborate tomb proves a feather in the cap of Alex O'Connell (Luke Ford), a young archaeologist and son of Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, taking over the role from Rachel Weisz). Unfortunately, a curse that turned the emperor (Jet Li) and his army into terra cotta warriors buried for centuries is lifted, and the old guy prepares for world domination by seeking immortality at Shangri La. The O'Connells barely stay a step ahead of him (climbing through the Himalaya mountains with apparent ease), but the action inevitably leads to a showdown between two armies of mummies in a Chinese desert. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor has a lot to offer: a supporting cast that includes the elegant Michelle Yeoh, Russell Wong, and Liam Cunningham, the unexpected appearance of several Yeti, and a climactic battle sequence that is nightmarishly weird but compelling. On the downside, the charm so desperately sought in romantic relationships, as well as comic turns by John Hannah (as Evelyn's rascal brother), is not only absent but often annoying. Rarely have witty asides in the thick of battle been more unwelcome in a movie. Rob Cohen's direction is largely crisp if sometimes curious (a fight between Fraser and Jet Li keeps varying in speed for some reason), but his vision of Shangri La, in the Hollywood tradition, is certainly attractive. --Tom Keogh

Battlestar Galactica: Season 3 [2006] [2004]

Battlestar Galactica: Season 3 [2006] [2004]

I missed the entire Battlestar Glactica oeuvre when it came out (indeed the original series as well) but read so many reviews about the allegorical sophistication of BG, I thought I'd better check it out. The obvious place to start is the 2004 mini-series, assembled on DVD as a three-hour feature (and selling for less than four quid on Amazon as I write). Aficionados claim the series doesn't get into its stride until later, but this was for me an impressive opener. The human species is attacked by the Cylons, a robot-race that comes in two distinctive designs; toaster-on-legs and hot, hot humanoid. Thanks to some sexy treachery involving the latter, the human defences are annihilated leaving a rag-bag of refugee vessels, clustered round the eponymous `Battlestar' a sort of ageing aircraft-carrier in space. A desperate fight-back begins, with the survival of the last remaining humans in the balance. The problem with much sci-fi is that it just isn't logical or convincing, but the `re-visioning' of BG here is remarkable. The plot, acting, semi-documentary filming style, the striking retro sets and the special effects all mesh together seamlessly and persuasively. The action is undeniably exciting, perhaps because it is balanced by reasonably realistic characterisation and a storyline that is engaging and often quite moving. All this quality sci-fi for only £1.25 an hour? A bargain!

Hornblower - The Complete Collection

Hornblower - The Complete Collection

Shame you can't give more than 5 stars because this deserves it.
This is one of my favourite series of all time. It follows Horatio Hornblower and his rise through the navy.

Ioan Gruffudd is fantastic in the role, starting out as a green 17 year old, he comes aboard ship. At first his is bullied by other crew members, such as Charlie Simpson (Dorian Healy) but his quick wits and couragous nature soon make him a favourite with his shipmates. Never compromising his honour he deals with every situation to the best of his ability.

Guest stars actors such as Dorian Healy and Andrew Tierman.
Paul Mcgann is, as always, brilliant in his role, as is Robert Lindsay.

Kept me awake well into the night, I couldn't wait till each evening when I could watch it again.
The only complaint I have is where they left it off, I want to know what happens next!! Ioan Gruffudd once said that he would like to play Hornblower again, so fingers crossed!

Can't recommend this enough.
