10 Things I Hate About You [1999]

10 Things I Hate About You [1999]

I'm 19 now (so was only 9 when '10 Things I Hate About You' came out) and I have seen this film way too many times to count. There have been countless sleep-overs, film days, random get-togthers and quite evenings alone that have all featured this film, so much so that I can now pretty much recite the entire script off by heart. Yet it is a mark of just how great this film is that, despite knowing it inside out I can still sit down and watch it and thoroughly enjoy doing so - it is and always will remain one of my favourite films.

When I was younger I never questioned anything in the films I watched - it is only as I have grown up that I have learnt to be critical of films, books and music, and even now, I can't fault any of the acting in '10 Things I hate About You'. Heath Ledger gives a dazzling performance as usual (which is surprising considering how reluctant Ledger was to take the part incase he became typecast) but the real breath-taking perfomance for me was by Julia Stiles - it is only now I am older that I can appreciate just how believably she managed to pull off her character that you do not for an instance question whether she is the 'rude, aggressive, bitter older sister of the most popular girl at school who only behaves in this way as a defense mechanism'. The remainder of the cast, Jospeh Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz etc all play their parts perfectly, and with a true 90's script and killer soundtrack this film couldn't fail to be anything but a success.

I guess that part of the appeal of this film for me is the fact that I grew up through my teenage years constantly watching it. If I was to be introduced to this film for the first time today, I am not sure whether I would like it anywhere near as much as I do now, but it has a certain sentimental value for me, and brings back many, many memories. And I have to say, in this genre of film, '10 Things I hate About You' will always come out on top. I guess that this film is my generations High School Musical, however, there is one key difference in my opinion - although this may be a teen chick flick it is in a class of it's own quality wise, and definatley should not be disregarded as anything less. Love it!!

Francesco's Italy - Top To Toe

Francesco's Italy - Top To Toe

CIAO CARO, BRAVO!! I have to say thanks to Amazon discounts for letting me know about you and your travels around Europe! I bought them all and I'm enjoying really much your work and attitude so far...then keep up doing always your best, because I think people needs to look around "following your intreresting perspective".

The good thing is that you're funny and not boring, while you're doing your helpful explanations here and there...I say this because I'm italian too (vivo vicino Venezia,ma essendo metà friulana, metà pugliese,ti capisco bene quando parli di sentire il cuore diviso in due!): I know well the kind of "old school", didactical dull approach that unfortunately our television gives to travels' programs, but with the exception of the great TURISTI PER CASO show (do you know them? They work for Rai 3:if you're curious to watch a little bit of them in action, go to the Youtube site,or Turistipercaso.it,their own site with a great source of info and community to chat about trips and connected stuff ..)
They are a smart journalist and a brilliant commedian, whom together with their production team are really good to glue two different points of view, with a hint for researching the untold stories and mysteries behind the surface of things, plus tons of humour,of course! ;-)

Above all,it's a great thing also to put in light the grandeur of Venice, that is always put beside Rome in Italy; because they don't want to recognize the real importance that it had been in our history,as for other cases, but I think it's perhaps because we are a relatevely young democracy,so we are still struggling to put together different people under a same flag (as Garibaldi said once.."Italy is done: now we have to make the italians!";-D)

Saluti e baci allora,al prossimo viaggio!
(PS_just one thing: it's natural that having to put together this kind of trips one have to recall cliches, etc,and it's fine,as in the book/movie "A good year",the english writer moved to Provence, began with them to finally arrive to show his personal flair towards the place...but please, don't teach your nice sons to wave "addio, addio!!"at the beginning of the trip, cause, you konw, nobody says it here since nineteenth century at least! It would be like bad luck,a sort of"final goodbye" in a funeral parade..."sto facendo le corna!" and however I'm a little superstitious and I'm joking,so don't be upset! Bye-bye***)

American Dad! - Series 3 - Complete [2007]

American Dad! - Series 3 - Complete [2007]

As good as the first 2 series.I enjoyed it more after repeated viewings and it grew on me as i missed some of the jokes 1st time around.
I think American Dad is a bit cleverer than Family Guy and obviously more political but Family Guy is still the best IMO.
The Magnificent Steven is my favourite episode and i would have given this dvd 4 1/2* and not 5* if i could but wanted to boost the overall rating.

Boston Legal - Series 4 - Complete [2007]

Boston Legal - Series 4 - Complete [2007]

Boston Legal is an excellent series which has many fine characters and stories. there however a couple of down points with this particular season. First Denny, there are a couple of times that he steps over the bounds from being humourously horny to lechorous, it's noticeable and you do feel like yuk!!! The second is the amount of political sniping and commentary which turns up especially oft used comments like "This Government" mind you Denny running for a presidential candidate was pure gold.

Apart from that this is a really fun series which at times makes you laugh out loud. Whilst it isn't as good as the first three seasons it does have some truly memorable moments and some excellent guest stars. As always the various speeches from the lawyers are slick and smooth. Additionally the introduction of new lawyers keeps it fresh and there is some nice development for Jerry.

If you have never watched any BL episodes then you really need to start with season one to get the various characters and their development but don't write this season off for some of its minor flaws. hopefully with the American Presidential Election decided Nov 4th then the 5th season should "Rock the House"

Northanger Abbey [2007]

Northanger Abbey [2007]

I have yet to see a perfect film or television adaptation of Northanger Abbey, but this one probably comes as close as any. It has its flaws, particularly in some of the screenplay. This has its weaknesses particularly in the dialogue, although I suppose this is inevitable when one tries to condense a novel into 93 minutes. The wonderful scene at the dance with that delightful conversation between Henry and Catherine where Henry says "Then we are on very unequal terms , for I understand you perfectly well", to which Catherine replies with one of the best lines in the novel: "Me? Yes, I cannot speak well enough to be unintelligible", is left out of this adaptation in its entirety. Indeed, much of the dialogue which defines Catherine's character is left out, or altered inappropriately. Her attractive honesty and naïvety, and the less easily perceived complexities of her character are thus given little chance to be defined. Other characters also are not quite correctly drawn. Mrs Allen, for example, is rather too rational and intelligent to be consistent with her character in the book. John Thorpe, probably the worst example of mis-characterization, while not exactly pleasant, is far from being the utterly obnoxious character he is in the novel. This places a completely different complexion on some of the important scenes which are included. We also have the almost obligatory change of plot in modern adaptations, i.e. the way in which Catherine is expelled from the Abbey, thus making the main characters reaction to it, and the story's ultimate dénoument, a little less forceful and a little more contrived. There are other flaws, but I won't continue to enumerate them. On the whole it is well done, and I enjoyed it very much.

Hogfather (2-Disc Edition) [2006]

Hogfather (2-Disc Edition) [2006]

I absolutely love anything and everything pertaining to discworld; I have 2 characters on the Discworld online game, one of which is a newbie helper. I've listened to every single one of the discworld books at least twice, and preordered the Colour of Magic DVD the very second I possibly could. With all that being said, I simply had to get my hands on this movie as soon as I heard it existed. Fortunately, I have a region free DVD player, so I ended up purchasing this region 2 2 disc edition of Hogfather. I can't say enough about how much I love
this movie. It remains extremely faithful to the book; in a lot of cases, dialogue is word for word out of the book, something which, at least in my humble opinion, is all to rare in book to movie adaptations. Another treat for me was that Nigel Planer, the narrator of the first 23 Discworld audio books, played the part of Sidney the wizard in the movie. As if that wasn't awesome enough, David Jason, who is currently one of my two favorite actors along side Hugh Laurie, played the part of Albert brilliantly. I thought that Ian Richardson did a fantastic job as the voice of death; he sounded just like I would imagine Death sounding from the books. Evrything I've already mentioned would be more than enough to earn this movie 5 stars as far as I'm concerned, but the real icing
on the cake, for me at least, was when I discovered that the region 2 version of the Hogfather DVD which I had purchased included audio description for blind viewers. As a blind individual, this fact in and of itself immediatley catipolted the Hogfather DVD into my top 10 favorites. It was great to know everything that was going on, while still watching the movie by myself. Further more, I was able to watch this movie with a blind friend, and even though he knew nothing about discworld, he was still able to follow what was going on and he ended up enjoying it almost as much as I did. I'm planning to share this movie with my parents over the Christmas/Hogswatch holiday and hope that they'll enjoy it too. If I were forced to come up with something negative to say about this DVD, the only thing I could possibly consider a flaw, and I'll be the first to admit that it's hardly even worth mentioning, is that I think that Tony Robinson should have played the part of Knobby Knobs; just based on the fact that he played the part of Baldrick in Black Adder. I could be completely off base with regards to thinking that this would be a good change, however, so please feel free to take my opinion regarding that issue with a pound or two of salt.
In all seriousness, though, I would most definitely rate this movie adaptation of Hogfather 10 stars. I don't know if audio description is going to be available on the Colour of Magic DVD, or even if it was available on the Region 1 edition of Hogfather, but I would certainly hope so. In my humble opinion, audio description should be as readily available as closed captioning, but that's not at all relevant to this review.
Bottom line: If you even remotely enjoy good British humor, fantasy, discworld or even if you're just in search of a different kind of Christmas movie, this DVD is an absolute must buy.
In closing, I can't help adding that if you enjoyed this movie and end up becoming a discworld fan, or if you're already a discworld fan, or even if you just enjoy online gaming, you should come and visit the discworld online game. The address is discworld.atuin.net port 4242. My characters, Eponine and Ramie would be more than happy to talk with or help out any newcomers to the game.
