Vantage Point [2008]

Vantage Point [2008]

One of the stars of Vantage Point-Dennis Quaid - has described the film as a "Kind of Rashomon [1950] [Special Edition]" alluding to the films method of showing the same 23 minute loop of time from several different perspectives. Whoah there Dennis , don't get carried away . Structurally , though he kind of has a point though in terms of quality these two films while not chalk and cheese are definitely wildly varying qualities of cheddar.
Vantage Point takes place at an anti -terrorism summit in Salamanca ,Spain( though most of the film was actually shot in Mexico) where the American President Ashton ( William Hurt) is making a speech. He is shot , a bomb goes off , general chaos ensues as you would expect. We, the audience, then to see events from the differing empirical perspective of six different characters- Television news producer Rex Brooks ( Sigourney Weaver) , US secret service agents Thomas Barnes( Dennis Quaid ) and Kent Taylor( Matthew Fox) Spanish police officer Enrique( Eduardo Noriega) American tourist Howard Lewis( Forest Whittaker) the terrorists and the president himself.
As the differing viewpoints of events unfold we learn more about the characters and incremental details and nuances of the terrorist plot and its participants. Things we see from one persons viewpoint turn out to mean something else altogether when seen from another's. As the tangled machinations of the plot are gradually unfurled Vantage Point resorts increasingly into generic thriller mode with car chases( very well done mind) gun fights ( again well done) and lots of running around ( errrrr.....)
It,s very far fetched though but proficiently directed and well acted by the quality cast though Dennis Quaid looks to be suffering from severe heartburn throughout. I rather regretted the fact that writer Barry Levy chose to take the script into mawkish soap territory with Forest Whitaker's character undergoing some cathartic healing process through looking after a young Spanish girl. Cute though this is it does,nt belong in this film. Plus the redemptive feel good apple pie ending misjudges the tone of the film giving it a syrupy denouement that jars .
I,m also confused about what the film is trying ultimately to say. Is is that one event seen only from one perspective can never be as cut and dried as we are led to believe or that no matter how well you plan, determined terrorist( we never learn the cause they espouse in this film ) acts are impossible to prevent? Either way from my vantage point this is a technically clever and exciting film that has to rely on a cute little girl to give it some real heart which is where this plot fails.

10 Minute Solution - Pilates

10 Minute Solution - Pilates

I was bought this DVD as I had a very bad back. I started using the first program and eventually worked my way up to being able to do all the programs. I lost weight and gained loads of core strength. It may not be true pilates (so I read) but it has done wonders for me and my back. I now use it to maintain my strength and supplement this with kickboxing (another 10 minute solutions) - something I never would have been able to achive before.

NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service). Season 1

NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service). Season 1

I started watching NCIS midway through season 3. I really enjoyed it so decided to get the season 1 box set. I'm glad I did. It is filled with action, excellent storylines and a wonderful cast. I have heard people compare this to CSI, this is nothing like CSI, it stands on it's own and shouldn't be put together with other crime shows. Highly recommended.

The Phantom Of The Opera

The Phantom Of The Opera

As I have never seen the stage show, I cannot compare the two. I have heard the music many times and always wanted to see it, now that I am able to I can say that it is one of the best musicals I have ever seen. The story is dramatic and sends shivers up your spine every 2 minutes. It takes you back in time to the point where I came out thinking that I should be wearing a corset and have my best puffy dress on. I love the attention to detail, not one thing looks out of place. The theatre looks amazing and the cinimatography is very good. I also thought that the actors fitted the roles perfectly, and their voices surprised me. Gerard Butler's voice was amazing, even though he had not sung before, he was the best phantom I've heard (though I am not saying that past ones have been bad), he brings a rock essence to the role and this makes the phantom seem somehow more real. I also think that Christine was very believable, casting Emmy Rossum in the role gave her a sence of niaveness. The story shows why the Phantom does such awful things and made me simpathise with him, it was put accross as not good and bad, I was able to understand every character. I loved everything about this movie. I became emmotionally involved and came out of it crying, I still cry every time I watch it on my small T.V. Truely amazing.

Extras: The Complete Boxset [2005]

Extras: The Complete Boxset [2005]

This is Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant at their absolute best. And I don't just mean in terms of acting, but its the direction of this series that I find brilliant. These guys get stars like Robert De Niro, Chris Martin, Patrick Stewart and Kate Winslet and add a totally new dimension to their persona. They add a kind of 'Gervais' attribute to each of the stars in the episodes and it just makes for a brilliant comedy series.

Highly recommended.

Doctor Who - The Brain Of Morbius [1976]

Doctor Who - The Brain Of Morbius [1976]

This has got to be one of the worst Doctor Who stories I have watched for some time and had me questioning not just the story itself but why I am collecting Doctor Who at all.
There is probably about 35 minutes of story stretched out into 4 x 25 minute episodes. I was waiting for it to end by the end of the second episode but we just had endless story progressions revolving around things like the characters moving back and forth between the sisterhood and the castle.
The only thing worth watching here is Elisabeth Sladen.
